Getting There

by Bruce Maples

I sit on the porch and look at the mountains,
    And realize …

I long to go over the next ridge.
    To experience life
In all its wonder and surprises.

I’d rather drive than fly,
And I’d rather walk than drive.
I want to see the big picture,
The grand sweep of life on this earth,
But also the smallest detail
Of a pebble on a dusty back-country road.

Most people I know
    Are intent on “getting there.”
Me, I’m much more interested
In the “getting” than in the “there.”
