Baptism

Dripping.
    Water
running out of beard, in rivulets
        down strong chest and arms.

Dripping.
    Off fingers
        made sinewy and rough
        by saw and mallet,
        by oak and cypress.

Dripping.
    From hair
        not yet gray
    From eyes
        clear and bright
    From chin
        firm in mature manhood.

Just as
    in three short years,
    would drip
        blood.
